Michael Jordan-Superintendent of the Year!

The Maywood Board of Education announces with great pleasure and pride that Superintendent of Schools Michael Jordan has been named this year’s recipient of the BCASA’s Superintendent of the Year Award. This honor is given to a Bergen County School Superintendent who has shown a commitment to leadership, communication, professionalism, and community involvement, as well as a record of service with their county affiliate and at the state level with the New Jersey Association of School Administrators.

Working alongside his colleagues and the Maywood Board of Education, Mr. Jordan has helped to establish a new scheduling format within the district to meet the individual needs of students, initiated an extensive investment in student technology resources, and instituted a teacher turnkey academy program.  He has led the district in their pursuit of an alternative high school path that would be fiscally and educationally advantageous, culminating in the NJ Commissioner of Education’s decision to allow Maywood students to attend Becton Regional High School in the Fall of 2020.  This decision was a direct result of Mr. Jordan’s tireless efforts and commitment to doing what is best for the students of Maywood. The District has seen tremendous growth in academic excellence as noted in performance report rankings in Bergen County and the State while continuing to focus on its acclaimed character education programs.

He is the first Maywood superintendent to win this award.

Mr. Jordan began his teaching career in 1994 at Seton Hall Preparatory Academy as a Teacher of Mathematics, National Honor Society Advisor, Student Ambassador Advisor and baseball coach. From there, Mr. Jordan served as Assistant Principal at Summit High School, Associate Principal at Indian Hills High Schools, and as Principal at Ramapo High School. In 2010 he was appointed the Superintendent of Schools for the Maywood Public Schools. Along with his in-district work, Mr. Jordan has been a member of the Bergen County Association of School Administrators (BCASA) Executive Council since 2013 where he has served as Legislative Chair and Vice President. Mr. Jordan has been BCASA president since July 2019.

A Seton Hall Pirate through and through, Mr. Jordan earned his B.S. in Business, an M.S. in Math Education & Educational Leadership, and his E.D.S. in Educational Administration from the university. He currently lives in Maywood, NJ, with his wife and fellow educator Michelle and his two children, Shannon and Ryan. He is the proud son of Margaret and Jack Jordan to whom he gives great credit and thanks them for setting him on his life’s path. Alongside his professional duties, Mr. Jordan is a longtime coach and volunteer for the Town of Maywood.

The Maywood Public Schools are a highly regarded suburban school system located ten miles west of New York City in Bergen County, New Jersey. Aptly known as the Home of Hawks, Maywood receives national recognition and ranks near the top in student achievement among New Jersey’s demographically-similar districts. The district serves just under 1100 students in two educational centers, Memorial School (PK-3) and Maywood Avenue School (4-8), each with an average grade-level population of less than 100 students.
