Principal's Message
Maywood Avenue School is located in Maywood, New Jersey and serves 495 students in grade levels 4 through 8. Students at Maywood Avenue School participate in core content subject area course work as well as elective course offerings including music (instrumental and choir), physical education and health, Spanish and art. Extracurricular opportunities include the student newspaper, yearbook, student ambassadors, peer leadership, student technical team, art club, a spring musical, REACT club, basketball teams, cross-country teams and intramurals.
Maywood Avenue School offers high-quality and diverse programs, and embraces both an elementary and middle school scope of operations. Fourth grade students are transitioned into Maywood Avenue School from Memorial Elementary School through the structure of a self-contained 4th grade class in which they receive core content instruction in mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. These students obtain their elective course offerings outside of the self-contained environment. Students in grade 5-8 are grouped within a middle school framework that is founded upon a departmental, team approach. While our school’s highly qualified staff works within a team model, they also have the opportunity to work within subject-related, cross-grade teams with the focus on curriculum mapping and differentiated instruction initiatives.
At Maywood Avenue School staff development is emphasized. Staff members attend workshops both within and outside of the district. Maywood Avenue School is also involved in the Montclair State University Clinical Faculty Program. Maywood Avenue School welcomes the acceptance and training of student teachers. Our school maintains a very active PTO and has established “HAWK Roundtables,” which are forums to increase the frequency of communication opportunities with parents on a variety of school and social topics. Parents also receive “MAS Snapshots,” which are e-mail informational notifications sent out on a daily basis. The Ambassador program has been created to act as a Big Brother/Big Sister mentoring program for the incoming 4th graders. Maywood Avenue School is currently using the interactive software program entitled Study Island for test preparation and focus on specific subject areas.
Maywood Avenue School’s support within the community is expansive. Our school enjoys a very productive relationship with the local police and fire departments, the town council, and the Rotary Club. Maywood is a small, close-knit community that prides itself on a quality education system and a tradition of dedication and commitment.
