Special Services
Supervisor of Special Services:
Ms. Sheryl A. Spencer, MSW, LSW
The Maywood Public Schools provide services for children with special needs between the ages of 3 through 21. Children who are identified as students with disabilities based on the standards set under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) are supported by special education services. A free, appropriate public education is available to all students with disabilities.
The department consists of a Supervisor of Special Services, Child Study Team (School Psychologist, Learning Consultant, Social Worker), Related Services including Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapist, and Physical Therapist, Special Education Teachers, Secretaries and Paraprofessionals.
The Child Study Team (CST) in each school may comprise a school psychologist, school social worker, and/or a learning disabilities teacher consultant. Each school within the district is serviced by members of the l team.
Referrals made by teachers, parents, or related school personnel who believe that a child may require an evaluation. Once a referral is received, the Child Study Team will evaluate the student to determine if special services are warranted. Once an evaluation has been conducted, members of the Child Study Team meet with parents and teachers to determine whether or not the child is eligible for special services.
If a student is in need of special services, team members work with parents, teachers, administrators and other professionals to develop an appropriate Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) for the student.
Please contact the Child Study Team , if you have specific issues or concerns that you would like to address. Please call Cassie Cerone administrative assistant 201-845-9110 and she will direct your call.
